“ Luminance of Streets ( 街の火 ) ”

GALLERY ZEROでは、2018年11月10日土曜日より12月1日土曜日までの3週間の日程で、星玄人 ( ホシ ハルト )の写真展 Luminance of Streets ( 街の火 ) を開催致します。

今展は、星の初期の代表的なモノクロ写真を集め、2007年に出版された写真集 Luminance of Streets ( 街の火 )からの作品と写真集には含まれていない同時期の作品で構成します。これらの写真は、1999年から2006年にかけて日本の様々な“夜の街“を撮ったものです。そこには酔っぱらった人やホスト・ホステスだけではなく、女装した人・やくざ・制服姿の少女・半纏姿の老人・裸体に近い状態でパフォーマンスをする女性・路上生活者など様々な人間模様が写し撮られています。

子供の頃から夜の街を徘徊するのが好きだった星は、思春期や大人になってからもますますその魅力に引き込まれ、「私が実生活で唯一解放された気分になれたのは日が暮れてからの町並みを用も無く歩きまわっている時でした。普段見慣れた忙しい景色に冷たい解放感が混ざりだしたような夜の空気は昼間よりも透明な輪郭で街を映し出し、自信の妄想世界よりも強く私の幼い欲望と好奇心を掻き立てていました。」と回想しています。いつも出会った人や場面からいろいろな物語を想像するのが好きだったという星。20代半ば生涯をかける表現方法を模索していた時、最初は映画に興味を持つものの、役者が表現して物語を造る映画ではなく、被写体の人物がそのまま主人公になれる写真によりやりがいを感じ、のめり込んでいきました。

星の写真はほとんど出会った人たちに許可を得て撮る手法でありながら、スナップショットを思わせるリアルさを持っています。その無造作な雰囲気に星独特の繊細な優しさが相まって、強烈なイメージの中にも人間臭さやコメディテイストが混在し、ノスタルジックなムード漂う独自のドラマを展開しています。現在まで東京を中心に発表してきた星ですが、大阪の西成・あいりん地区で多々撮影を行って来た星にとってなじみ深い大阪での、初個展を是非ご覧下さい。またこの度の個展は、写真集 Luminance of Streets ( 街の火 ) のオリジナルプリントを展示致します。その意味でもまたとない機会かと存じます。 

This exhibition features Haruto Hoshi ‘s early black and white photographs consisting of both works from the book “Luminance of Streets” and works made about the same period not included in the book. Those photos were taken in various nightlife districts throughout Japan from 1999 to 2006. Hoshi’s images reveal not only drunks, hosts and hostesses, but also variety of people such as drag queens, Yakuza, a girl in school uniform, a woman performing in near-nude state. 

Hoshi liked to stroll the night cities since childhood and became even more attracted by those dark scenes after becoming adolescent and adult. “I felt freedom in real life only when I was walking around cities after dark without purpose. The night air, which was like an atmosphere blending a cold openness into the familiar busy-scenery, reflected the city with a translucent outline more clearly than the daytime. It evoked my young desires and curiosity more strongly than my illusion.” Hoshi recalled.

Hoshi liked to imagine various stories from people and scenes he met. When he was seeking a lifetime artistic expression in his twenties, he was interested in movies at the beginning, but soon became fascinated with photography that allows a subject person to become a main character as he/she is, unlike a movie in which actors express a story.
