8年ぶりとなります桑原正彦の新作展は、淡いグレーを基調色としたストイックな展示となりました。

そのモチーフ故に若い作家の可愛い作品と誤解されがちなのですが、桑原はそのキャリアの初めより、日本の環境問題を意識しながら、その事を現代日本の風景画として制作してきました。その事は個展のタイトルに明確に示されています。初個展の「石油化学の夢 (1995)」から、「埋めて忘れなさい (1996)」「暮らしと膿 (2001)」「土地開発 (2005)」「成形肉 (2011)」と続くタイトルは、日本の高度経済成長により発生した負の遺産 (環境問題等) を、彼自身の絵画の創作源としている証です。

今回の淡い光に満たされた静物画は、汚染物質による灰もしくは霧に満たされた状況を表現しているかもしれません。その中に佇むモチーフは、社会への何らかの警鐘の様なものではないかと思います。桑原は、漫画やサブカルの表現を用いながら、素朴で可愛いながらも深い洞察を含んだ静物画を表現したのです。静かで可愛い絵画には、全てを包み込む大きな優しさが秘められています。

Kuwahara's new exhibition  for the first time in eight years is an ascetic exhibition based on gray.

Because of his paintings motifs of cute, he is often misunderstood as a young painter of kawaii paintings. But he have been working on it as a modern Japanese landscape painting while being aware of Japanese environmental issues since the beginning of his career. That is clearly indicated in the title of his exhibition. 「Petrochemical dream」「Fill and forget」「Living and pus」「Land development」「Molded meat」, these titles are the proof that negative heritage (environmental issues, etc.) caused by Japan's high economic growth is the source of his creation.

These still life paintings filled with dim light may represent a situation filled with ash or fog due to contaminants. I think the motifs standing in them are like a kind of warning bell for society. Kuwahara used manga and subculture expressions to create simple yet cute yet still life paintings of including insight. Quiet and cute paintings have a great kindness that wraps everything.
