“ open water ”

今回のタイトル「 open water 」は、開放水域（航行自由な水域）、またプールとは違う戸外の自然の水域を意味します。2012年の個展「waterside」から、坂井の展覧会タイトルには水に関連する言葉が使われてきました。続く2014年の「upside-down」、昨年の「under water」から今年の「open water」へと、坂井はそれぞれの水域・環境が示す絵画空間に、自身の意識を重ね合わせていると言えるでしょう。レンブラントを例に出すまでもなく、自画像は個人の歴史を表現すると共に、人間共通の喜怒哀楽を共有出来るモチーフです。坂井は個人の顔ではなく、水の状況・環境とそこに現れる人の動作によって、自画像と同じ表現をしているのです。水辺からの視点が徐々に水面へと、そしてプールにも似た水中の閉じられた空間の中での滑稽な人びとの仕草をへて、やがて外海へとつながる流動的な水の動きに身を任せる人物が登場してきました。円環するイメージは数年を経て同じ様な場所へと戻って来ましたが、嘗てのイメージとは少し趣を異にしています。

コンセプチュアルアートやインスタレーションが全盛の1990年代において、具象絵画を描くという一つの命題のもと自身の表現を模索し続けてきた坂井は、日本の現代美術における画家のパイオニアであり、今もその創作意欲には目を見張るものが有ります。動きのある突き抜けた水のイメージと共に、少し滑稽な人物たちは観る者の心を癒し、力づけてくれます。濁りのない色彩と共に坂井の絵画世界をお楽しみ下さい。

The themes of Sakai’s work have been “water” and “human beings” since the beginning of her career. In her paintings, it might be said that “human beings” mean her own emotion and relationships with others and “water” expresses the circumstances surrounding people.

This exhibition features Sakai’s new paintings which display the mixture of her current and early styles.

In the 90’s when conceptual art and installation works were mainstreams in the art world, Sakai drew attention with her Neo-Expressionism style works. She is one of the pioneer painters to have reevaluated paintings at that time in Japan.

Yoshie Sakai was born in 1965 and lives and works in Wakayama, Japan.
